The Kingston Phoenix Road Club is a small cycle-racing club based in the Kingston/Epsom/Sutton area of South London.
We were formed in 1936 as the racing arm of the Kingston Section of the Cyclists Touring Club and currently have a small but loyal membership of roughly 30 people. Our main claim to fame in recent years has been the number of women actively racing for the club: for most of the last 20 years we have had 4 active racing female members - which is quite high by local standards - and in 2004 there are now 8!
Our main area of racing is Time Trialling, and we are affiliated to the London South District of the Road Time Trials Council, the RTTC. At the end of 2002 the RTTC became a limited company and changed it's name to Cycling Time Trials, because of insurance concerns.
Various members dabble in other kinds of racing such as road racing with the Surrey League and the League of Veteran Racing Cyclists, and mountain-biking.
Sadly we have outlasted the Kingston Section, but now have links with the Cheam & Morden Section of the Cyclists Touring Club. The Cheam & Morden is part of the South West London DA and information about their rides, and the other sections in the DA can be found here.
We are not a club of superstars by any means. On many occasions we have won awards by default: our riders have finished in the prizes because it was a wet or windy day and the fast men didn't ride! So overall we are a club of plodders, whose main aim in life is to enjoy our sport.
New members are always welcome - hopefully I will soon have the time to add more information about us to entice you. Do not be put off by the fact that the Secretary lives in Maidenhead and the Time Trials Secretary lives near Wembley, this is an indication of their loyalty to the club despite having to move away due to other aspects of their lives.
The Phoenix have a club night on a Thursday evening between roughly 8:30pm-10pm. In theory it is a joint clubroom between the Phoenix and the Cheam & Morden. It is held at Worcester Park Athletic and Social Club, which is in Green Lane, Worcester Park, well hidden behind Worcester Park station. We now share it with the Clarencourt CC as well. There is a bar, and hopefully lots of convivial chat.
If you would like further details about the club, are an ex-member who would like to get in touch again, or wish to make contact with a specific member then please email the Secretary
