At first it seemed a nice warm summer afternoon with a light breeze, but once you started it dawned on you that the "light breeze" was in fact a cross-wind in both directions and a rather warm one at that! It was, in fact, a rather warm afternoon with many riders succumbing to the conditions on one of the four times they passed the headquarters. I don't think it was an especially hard day, but many found the conditions too much. Simon and I both suffered in the heat - although I think I had a bad day, and the heat just made it worse: I emptied a full waterbottle inside the first 10 miles. Ann thrived on the conditions and stormed to a pb. Jen completed her 25 for the year and Pete got his ride (as 10th reserve in a full field, it wasn't guaranteed) and improved his time to a "5". The result board listed his time as 1:4:43, but he stopped his watch a shade over 1:5:43 and, as he was called to the line with 30 seconds to spare when No. 52 failed to appear and the reserve who had been waiting ahead of him suddenly vanished, he didn't have the usual minute to deduct from the figure. He is convinced that the 1:5:43 is correct and we await the result sheet. |
